This week this has been shown to me more than ever. As you all know Keyton is Highly allergic to Wheat/Gluten of any kind. Well on Tus. night after eating at chick-fil-a for family super hero night he had the worst reaction he has had ever. I don't know how he got the wheat the only thing I can think of is cross contamination or he ate my fries that I put in my sandwich bag. Well we got home from there and the big kids where coloring when I started noticing things. Looking back I should has noticed how fussy he was but he had also hit his head really hard at the store before we ate. Any ways I saw a few spots on his hand and made him take his costume off and he was becoming covered with little red spots. Oh no is all I could think I started hounding him on what he had at school, home and if he ate anything at chick-fil-a off the floor. The answer was no every time. He also has been on Zyrtec for sinuous infection that week and had already taken it before so I did not think I could give him Benadryl too(found out later I could have). I watched him for a while and he started swelling around the neck, lips, and ears. I took him in right away. We waited for ever to be seen of course and then the Doctor did not even look at his spots. I was made as could be because on one his foot looked like a huge knot almost as if he broke his foot. Also his hand had one on it that looked like the foot. He treated me like a dumb mom who does not know what I am talking about. Needless to say I have not been impressed and really have no respect for the Texas Tech training doctors. He ordered Benadryl for him and then I showed the nurse how bad he was and she told me to stay for about 30 to 45 mins. to see if he gets better or if the hives spread or the swelling gets worst. We did and the hives started spreading to his back and neck which they where not there before the benadryl. Also the swelling to his foot and hand got a little worst. They called the doctor and he ordered Keyton Steroids to help jump start the healing. His breathing was fine and his heart rate too which is great that it did not close him off but he did say his throat was hurting to breath and swollow so some irritation was happening. The swelling stopped so we went home but not before the Nurse told me to push his doctor to give him an epi-pen for this so that it does not get like this again. He had to be on steroids, benadryl and Zyrtec. We put him to bed in our room so that if the swelling started to move inside his mouth we would hear him. He woke up and looked good on wed. the swelling was all but gone and the hive looked good...for a while and still had a scratchy voice from the irritation. Next morning he woke up and looked horable his whole head was so red from hives and his tummy and back. Hive do get worst when the body starts to digest the food again and with heat so since the swelling was not bad they told me to start oatmeal baths and Benadryl cream to help stop the itching. He looks good today and feels so much better thank goodness. Hoping that it is all out of his system and that this never happens again. The only thing that really gets me is that I am so good at keeping him away from it and this happened. Of coarse I feel like I let him down in some way and I know there is nothing I could do its just part of being a Mommy to feel this way. Also God was watching him that night because....We got home so late that normally I would just tell the kids to get into Jammies and get to bed. I would have said their prayers and then left them alone for a while to fall asleep. Thankfully the Zyrtec he was on did slow the reaction down some and he had that right when we got home. I just cant help but think if it was a regular night I could have lost him in his sleep before I knew what was going on. God also tugged on my heart to not leave the hospital after the benadryl so that we could see that it was still spreading and he helped the meds work. We where lucky this time...very lucky. Thank you Lord for watching over him and putting all that into place so that he would be fine. Now we are working on getting an epi-pen for us and one for school. I also talked to his teachers because he did not feel up to going to school on Thurs. but we did have to drop big sis off. I showed them his poor body also. They let me know how good he is at knowing what he can and can't have or to ask. They said on the playground he will get in line for the little snacks they give out and if it is something he cant have he backs up and says "no I cant have that I am allergic to wheat and gluten" Even with candy he knows to ask first. I was impressed and proud of him about that. It makes my fears of school a little better. I am also grateful that both his teacher have kids who have special diets and one does gluten free everything so she is already looking for it. It has been a stressful week with Him but things turned out wonderful.
Here are some pic of him and they are backwards...starts with thursday and then tus...
